OUR FRONT DOOR

Today I enter Blog World in need of advice. We are having a hard time deciding on a color for our front door. I know , I know, it seems like an easy decision, well maybe for some people but not for us. I am leaning toward the cranberry color of the shutters, but Harold is wanting the same cream color as the trim. Now don't get concerned, there is no marital discord happening here. I was quite amazed when I Googled front doors and saw how many forums there are out there discussing front door colors, so I said "why not ask my friends (whose opinions I usually trust) about my door". Now I know that it is easy to get too caught up in symbolism, but there are times when it can be healthy to incorporate a little into our lives. The Chinese are very into the color of your front door symbolizing the harmony of the home. They even go so far as to say "If there is an imbalance at the front door it can affect every aspect of life". As Christians we would probably say that is taking it a little too far, but then again the outside of our houses should reflect harmony within. There have been a few that I have been afraid to knock on since the lifestyle they reflected left me feeling a little wary. I found a quote that says "The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live". Hopefully our front doors symbolize that God's Word has been "written upon the doorposts".
Please understand that we are still working on our "curb appeal". The landscaping is still a work in progress. The picture will give you an idea of how the finished product will look. Some of you will be brave enough to write down your opinion for me. For those of you who wish to remain anonymous I will let you vote in the the poll to your right. Thanks for your help.

PS Those of you who remember that the front door of my trailer opened into the laundry room will understand why I am so excited about my new front door.

Well.....being the owner of a red front door, I am voting for something in the reddish/cranberry family. And if memory serves me correctly, doesn't that symbolize something akin to happiness in Chinese lore?!

Loving your house.....

Tara,
I did do some research on red doors. The Chinese consider it "good Karma". I also saw it referred to as symbolizing the Passover. I just like it because it matches the shutters and gives more personality to the house.

I was going to try to vote ten times, just for your sake, but it wouldn't let me:)
I personaly like the matching of the cranberry for the front door. Just think it would look nice on your house, which is very nice by the way! Very happy for you!
Also, I had the oddest dream about you last night....don't know why I am dreaming about you, but who can control their dreams, you know?:)

Definately cranberry:
1) Will be easier to keep clean!:)
2) Will be the same color as mine!:)
3) Not for nothing...doors on Methodist churches are always red...that must symbolize something..probably 2nd-blessed Holiness!! How could you think of painting it any other color!!!

Kimberly's comment about second blessed holiness made me laugh out loud!

I vote for....CRANBERRY! Maybe it's a girl thing???

Charlene,
I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. I'll pray that you sleep better tonight.

Kimberly,
Wow, I had no idea. Looks like you and Tara must have the "real thing".

Mary,
Hopefully we can get a few more male opinions so we know if it is a girl thing or if Harold has been officially outvoted.

I have a new fear. I read that in Scotland when you pay the mortgage you are expected to paint the door red. I don't want to wait that long.

Mary Ellen said...

Well then, don't paint it red, it wouldn't match anyway, paint it cranberry! Hee hee.

Uh yeah - good luck with the whole getting males to comment thing, you might have to settle for verbal opinions instead of written comments. There are a few male bloggers/commenters but they are few and far between! Which in this case might work very well for you. "-)

I would definitely go with the cranberry. It is a favorite color of mine and would work for all the holidays. And as for the male opinion goes, most men are color blind - or so they say! Who knows. Just go with cranberry. We all think it would look great.

I say cream..okay so shoot me!! Phillip says cream definitely. He says if you paint it cranberry....go on and put a sign up that says "Madam Leveau's House of Voodoo" along with it!! Ha!! He is just kidding but we both go for the cream..sorry girls!!

I think cranberry...I love the connection to 2nd blessed holiness!

Cranberry! When I envision cream I also see hundreds of muddy hand prints. I'm very thankful that I have a John Deere green door (not my choice - I live in campus housing) not for the color but for the convenience. Lazy...I know :o)

I remember you! :) At camp this year we stayed just a few doors down from your old home.
I vote black, don't really know why other than it would flow with the rest of the color scheme on the exterior of the house.

loree2000 said...

Black wasn't an option.....but it might look okay! :)
Given the choice of the two colors. Maybe you could incorporate bothe colors into the door. Possibly paint the panels (if it has them)one color or the other?

Around here, cranberry is the door of choice. Knowing the neighborhood, I don't think it has anything to do with 2nd blessing holiness ;o) Maybe just an association to kidney infections and juice or something. So... I'm tired of red, red, red. Aren't you glad I'm not painting your door?! Go with whatever color gives you the feel you're looking for. Some colors just soothe the soul... Can't you see your visitors gazing calmly at your hue of choice, and saying, "Now, that Kayla, is just brilliant, brilliant, I say!"

Kayla's husband is making his rare appearance in the world of bloggers.

As I write my dad is dutifully painting the door cranberry. I am certain that my wife, known affectionally to me as "Blog Queen" will have a picture of it up soon.

I never really had a chance with cream. Notice that all comments have been from the fairer sex. Thanks alot to all of the male lurkers that could have given me a boost in the polls.

To be honest I never really cared. Yes, cream was my first choice but I have questioned other Kayla inspired color schemes, and decorating ideas that I must admit turned out great! I just like to "stir the pot".

J R R Tolkein said "It is a dangerous business going out your front door". I could not agree more and agree with Kayla that I want our home to be a haven. Another door quote I like is by Ogden Nash. It is about dogs but I am quite certain it pertains to kids as well. "A door is what a dog is perpetually on the wrong side of."

Ok, I will now slip back into the shadows of the blogosphere. Always here watching from the shadows.

Well sounds like you got your wish. I was voting for Cranberry as well. Would definately look nice with the shutters. Love the house. Looks very nice! I've been a little out of touch with the world so am just seeing it now. Hope you are enjoying your new home!

First I will introduce myself. I'm a distant cousin. I don't believe we've ever met. I got your blog from Kimberly N. I believe that your mom and my dad may be first cousins. (Jerry Larpenter is my dad). I'm Beth Larpenter-Shurbutt and live in Northeast Alabama, but was born and raised in Louisiana. I've greatly enjoyed your blog but have never commented. I can no longer keep my silence. (grin)

Now that your front door is painted cranberry, what color is the garage door to be?? Maybe we should have another poll!!!

PS Your boys are precious! Enjoy them because they grow up too quickly.

Love your house. Cranbury it is. It will draw more attention to the home. yes the home. It is an ivitation and a freindly thing. yes, it may be a girl thing. But it will stand out nicely when it is painted the cranbury. Thanks for sharing. Hope Harold isn't holding his head down to much, You have to go by your instinct. May you have a blessed day.

Well Kayla V.

I noticed this blog too late, but had to add my 2 cents. Typical, right?! HAHA!

Although I love the Cranberry, I tend to be different. Sooooo, that being said, I have a different idea.

I can't describe it, but I think a really deep, rich blue would have been beautiful. I like the contrast of shutters and a door being different. And a rich blue would have been beautiful with a Cranberry, not to mention it would be a great door for any occasion or decoration.

BUT....the cranberry is pretty as well.

I'm so happy for y'all. May God richly bless your happy home!

I love you girl!

Sorry I didn't get to vote, but would definitely have chosen cranberry! Can't wait to see a picture!

Jenn's idea would be very patriotic:)

By the way, I feel REALLY bad.  I got a comment from Loree2000 and thought it was spam.  I keep getting odd messages that are viruses if you click on them.  When I clicked on her link, my computer started acting wierd so I deleted the comment off my blog.  I'm really sorry if it's really somebody!  Let me know if you know her and it's safe to check out her link. You can check out my blog or email me.

Have enjoyed reading the comments to this post!! I arrived too late to vote, but I would have voted for cranberry as well! (Sorry, Harold. Although your comments were quite funny.)

Am looking forward to seeing beautiful pics of this beautiful door gracing the front of your beautiful home!!

Kayla, I have to admit I never really noticed front doors before unless they were exceptionally different and pretty, but I caught myself looking at the front doors on every home we passed as I was driving yesterday and thought of you and Harold the whole time! I will notice front doors forever now! And now I'm thinking about my own...I just might need to replace it:) I'll tell David to thank you and Harold:)

OK so now that your door is the John Wesley approved color does it work? I mean if I bring my kids down, will they fall at your door step and recognize their selfish willful spirits and yeild their lives to Jesus? Has it worked for your kids? If so, I'll be down in a day. :) I painted our door the shutter color too. Too bad it wasn't red. Hey Kim does Green have any Second Blessing Holiness connections?
