My Daily Prayer For Grace
Have you ever seen a lizard have a nervous breakdown? I got to experience this phenomenon first hand last week. The boys filled up the wagon with soap and water and were just getting ready to scrub the first two lizards in their collection when I walked out the door. The poor little creatures were frantically trying to get away while bubbles dripped from their tails and gizzards. I tried to be patient as I emptied the wagon and tried to explain why we don't bathe lizards. I had already explained to Collin at least five times why we don't put lizards in plastic bags and freeze them. Don't ask me why he wanted to do this, I have no explanation. Shortly after this escapade was over Harold suggested that we go to the beach for the evening. Now those of you who know me well know that the beach is not my favorite place to take the boys simply because of the mess it creates in the car and house. But in the interest of being a good Mom, I consented. So after I changed them out of the stinky wet clothes they were wearing and into their swim shorts we piled into the van and headed for the beach. Now I will never understand how they managed to get sand from the top of their heads to the bottom of their feet, I mean their scalps were even covered. So we came back home with all our wet, sandy clothes and towels to pile in the washer on top of the already stinky wet ones. When I walked into the house and saw a snake on the floor I looked somewhat like the lizard that I had rescued earlier in the day. Okay, it was only a plastic one, but in the dimly lit house it took me off guard. By the time they were done in the bathroom it looked like the "sands of the sea" had all been deposited in my tub. Needless to say my patience was wearing thin. I was in the mood to fuss. Then Harold called me to computer to look at the pictures that I had taken that day. I quickly realized that I needed a new perspective. These aren't outlaws I am dealing with they are just little boys. How often have I overreacted to something that in the light of eternity really didn't matter. My hope is that God will give me wisdom to decipher between character flaws and childish curiosity. My daily prayer is for the "Grace", the courage to let little boys be little boys, to realize how fleeting the moments of childhood are. So if you see my boys covered with mud, swinging from the trees, or bathing lizards, they are not being neglected, they are just being little boys. Here are a few lines from a poem I recently read. I don't know who the author is, but her words spoke to my heart.
I Took His Hand and Followed
My dishes went unwashed today,
I didn't make the bed,
I took his hand and followed,
Where his eager footsteps led.
Oh yes, we went adventuring,
My little sons and I,
Exploring all the great outdoors,
Beneath the summer sky
That my house was neglected,
That I didn't brush the stairs,
In twenty years, no one on earth,
Will know or even care
But that I've helped my little boy,
To noble manhood grow,
In twenty years the whole wide world,
May look and see and know.

Kayla...You are such a great writer. You get my attention and hold it to the very last word. I laughed until I snorted at the bathing of lizards and freezing of them!!!! I also found it humorous to imagine you having a nervous breakdown at the site of a "snake". Very good post! Keep them coming. I loved thge poem...so well written.
I absolutely love reading your blogs. Very funny today! Those pictures of your boys are so cute. I love the one at the beach with them all facing the ocean. Thank you for the reminder to put things into perspective. I too want to treasure moments with my children and enjoy them. And I definitely cannot get too much of Gods Wisdom and Grace either. Great post!!
Love the post, Kayla!! I enjoy your stories so very much, and your point is well made. Even we single people need to remember to put life into perspective - that people are so much more important than schedules and to do lists. Thanks for jogging my memory!!
Love the new blog title. Love the pictures. Love the post. Love YOU!
OH Kayla - I can SO relate to this blog!!! I too hate, hate, hate the mess that going to the beach makes. In fact, although we moved back here seven years ago this month, we have only started going to the beach in the last two years. I finally decided that no matter how much mess it created, I NEEDED to take the kids to the beach that was just a stones throw away. Every single time when it's over I cringe at all the work it creates but I also LOVE to see how much fun the kids are having while they are there and their happiness outweighs the extra work it creates for me.
I have to admit that right now there are all kinds of containers and bags in my freezer holding bugs for my oldest sons upcoming 4th grade bug collection - tell your son he can add bugs to my freezer anytime for the next couple of weeks...but no lizards!
With far too many rubber and plastic spiders, frogs, and snakes in this house I too have jumped out of my skin at the sight of one in a dimly lit room.
Wow - it is ever so refreshing to read a blog that I can relate to in every single way coming from another MOm!!!
I forgot to say...I don't know how kids get so much sand in so many places from tip to toe but all of mine come home covered too - it is especially hard getting it out of Kaitlyn's hair since it falls to below her waist!! I often think by the time everyone is cleaned off..."I wonder if we left any at the beach!?!?!"
Kayla I enjoyed your blog I love the picture of the four boys setting looking at the water. Very cute. Of course I love the water at the beach. Though I too don't like the mess that follows. But they are washable. Maybe you can save the sand and put it in a sandbox. Ha Ha. Well, it is a thought. I pray you have a blessed day.
Cool changes...great beach pic.:) (Dylan is such a big boy sitting(mostly) by himself!) And you are definately striking the right balance, my dear, in the quest of those precious boys becoming men...your role in that process is beautiful! Love you!
Kayla, as has already been pointed out, you are truly a prolific writer. You captured my heart as a mom of boys in your words. I love that we both came up with similar blog headers (you have no idea how proud I was of myself the night I figured that out)...as you said, great minds DO think alike.
Regarding the beach mess...my bro-in-law taught me to strip the kids at the door and literally hose them down...as they have gotten older this has become problematic (for obvious reasons) but the older ones are much better at getting most of the sand off with a towel. But the suburban, now that is a different story, THAT is where I cannot believe how much sand we accumulate after a trip to the Lake.
(love your title too, btw)
Josiah planted a rubber snake on a hike in Idaho this summer and really did scare me! The look on his face was such shear delight to have "gotten mom" that it is a really sweet memory. I just couldn't believe he was old enough to really get me...
Thank you for your comment. I don't know when we or I will be coming down again. We never know!
I pray you all God's Blessings.
I loved your post & well, everything else, too! Your pix of your lil guys are very cute.
The lizard story reminds me of Derek's little sister a couple years ago - she is 1 year younger than my Austin. They had several hamsters/gerbils for pets & there were always babies around, which are really, really small. Her mom walks in the room and Abbie is squeezing one of these little guys and goes, "Look, Mom, if you squeeze 'em kinda tight, their eyes bulge out!" The look on her mom's face was similiar to yours when you saw the "snake" I bet!
PS Also, I did so much want to say, I totally enjoyed and very much related to your statements. I want to enjoy every fleeting second I have with my kids. As they are almost as tall as I am and keep on growing so quickly, I am very much reminded just how fast the time goes.
I also feel the need for the daily prayers of grace and courage! Thanks for bringing this to our attention - it never hurts to be reminded of these things!
Oh my goodness... your day sounds like mine. Except replace the sand with VERY dry dirt. Uck!
I make the boys do the whole "strip at the door-straight to the shower" thing and scrub and scrub those heads (at least their hair is short huh?! aaah!)
Speaking of critters...Once Justin came running in the house with a BALL of wriggling worms. I have a pretty strong stomach but the sight of that made me gag!
LOVE THE POEM. I need to copy it and hang it in my kitchen!
I absolutely loved this post!!! Even read it to my hubby!!! Thank you so very much for a good reminder, a great poem, and chuckles!! Your boys are just toooooo cute!!
Upon reading your snake story, I was reminded of a time (when I lived across from you all) and your dear husband came and took care of a REAL snake that was "sitting" on my kitchen sink!!!!! Please thank him again for me!! :-) Have a great week!
Want to say, I LOVE your new blog heading, title, and picture of the boys!!! Touching and beautiful!!
I got a kick out of reading your post. The picture of the quartet at the beach is great. I love the freezer idea. Just think, If you had several bags of frozen lizards and a hurricane hit, you would be set. I wonder how they would taste grilled. I would like to believe that the critter problem is a boy thing, but I think that my girls are pretty brave about picking up creepy creatures. I was glad to see that I can get rid of the guilt about not liking sand everywhere. It has bugged me a lot, but I didn't realize that native Floridian moms felt as strongly as I did about the issue. The sand just seems to gravitate to bodies. It is especially fun if you put sunscreen on the kids. Now you can't get the sand or the sunscreen off. I needed to be reminded that life is too short to not let our kids enjoy the things that make a mess. Have a memorable day!
Loved the poem. I too need to be reminded to let my kids be kids and that my house can wait. We don't take too many trips to the beach because I just hate the mess it creates. So much more work, like I don't have enough already. But we have tried to go a few times lately. Their just aren't enough hours in the day to fit it all in. I haven't had any problems with lizards in my freezer, since my girls aren't into bugs. And Zach knows that they need to stay outside. Enjoy the kids while we can! they'll be all grown up efore we know it. Like the poem says in 20 years it won't matter.
Loved the new look...the terrific picture of the boys facing the ocean & the new title; it is great!
You gave me my first belly laugh for today at the bathing lizard story!
Thanks for sharing.
Kayla, I love that poem you posted!!! And I adore the picture of your 4 boys sitting at the beach.
It was so good to talk to you today...and I am so glad you found the 360 blogs. And to think I have finally been tagged...HA! Now I need to think of some random things about myself that I haven't already told the world! (-:
Kayla...just wanted to tell you something funny...Katy was just playing on the porch with her baby doll and informed me, out of the blue, that the baby's name was "Kayla" and she was her best friend. She must have been thinking of you bc I haven't even mentioned your name lately! Just thought you would find that humorous as did I! Love YA!
Kayla,
This was such a beautiful post. I'm not a mommy, but I had tears in my eyes while reading the poem. What a wonderful job you are doing with these fine boys! :)
I LOVED this post! So funny. My oldest (Joshua) never really did things like that. It seems he was just born doing things the way I like it done. But Jacob is the one who tests me in this way! He came up to me yesterday and said "here mommy" and had something hidden in his hand. Thinking he was bringing me a flower or something else harmless, I held out my hand and he placed a spider in my hand. Yikes!
Hey Kayla. This entry made me cry my eyes out. So sweet. You have such a beautiful family (Harold included, LOL).
I am new to this blog site and can't figure out to add people. Any help would be appreciated.
