Product Reviews

The picture to your left is what my boys hair usually looks like before haircuts. This is because I never want to cough up the money so I wait until they have Afros. Recently I saw an advertisement for the Wahl Clip 'Trim Haircutting System. I know that several of my faithful blogging buddies are also mothers of all boys, so I was wondering if anyone has ever tried it. If it works, it would save us a lot of dough. Please let me know if any of you recommend this product.

Also since we are traveling for a month this summer, we are looking into getting a DVD player for our van. I think it would really be helpful for those moments when we can't take another "he's touching me" or "are we almost there yet". If anyone has one, please let me know how it works. I think that there are several different styles. Just wondering which ones work best for vans, picture quality, or whatever else you like or dislike. Thanks in advance for your help.

Kayla--saw your post at the Hobe Sound Blogs site. We have two boys and own the portable DVD player. I fought getting it, because we didn't have one when *I* was a kid (!), but the boys know it's only for long trips, and we keep it stored away at other times.

We got a cheapo from Target (TruTech w/7" screen)--cost about a hundred bucks. A friend gave us a nice leather case that has speakers, though I don't know if we have actually used those speakers yet. The case has a strap system that we could use to hang it between the front seats of our Toyota Sienna, but we just set it on top of pillows, which works fine. It also has a remote. We have had it since the first of this year and it has been great for us.

$ is really about the bells and whistles. Our battery does not last a long time, and the sound seems like it should go a little louder than it does, but it is a DVD player--picture looks great, everything else like you would normally expect.

I use the Wahl thingie. Our cost $20? and came with an instructional DVD. Now I must say, Nathan's haircut is a simple shorter buzz- he got sick of messing with a comb. But we think it looks fine. For someone who had never cut hair before, I've been pleased that the trimmer is easy to use...

We always cut Zach's hair ourselves. His hair grows so fast and I too hate spending the money for haircuts. I also cut Rod's too. The nice thing about these things is their are different pieces you attatch and it determines the length of the cut. So I say give it a try. Worst case scenario is they could be bald. HA!

We have a two screen one, the DVD player hooks behind one head rest and the other screen connects to it with a chord - which is a must for us with four kids because there is no way they can all see one screen!

It came with everything you need to hook it to the seats, etc. Nothing extra to buy and it works great. It all packs away in a holder with handles too - I love ours. We only use it for long trips and keep it put away otherwise, don't know how long it would last for daily use. Charlene has one like ours and has been very happy with hers too. We got them at Walmart and they only have one that fits that description (two seperate screens).

I have a Wahl because Ethan is terrified of going to a barber, I use it to give him a buzz, it came with no instructions or videos and it's been easy to use for a buzz.
I happened to see this last night in Reader's Digest, a free hair cutting guide at www.wahlkeepitclean.com if you want to check it out. Feel free to borrow mine if you want to try it once before you buy one, I wouldn't mind one bit!

Kayla,
Really can't help you with the haircutting thing as I am the first to run to Fantastic Sams for my boy's hair! I just don't trust myself. And on the DVD player: Keri bought the kids a portable one for Christmas. It has a 9 in. screen (which I think is the largest you can get for a portabe?), and came with a car charger that plugs right into the lighter jack (our van has one in the back which is nice). For now, our kids just prop it on a pillow and it works just fine. Now the day will come when all FOUR will want viewing pleasure and that may pose a problem! In that case, I do think MaryEllen's suggestion is best. I've looked at those, and they look great. Buying the one-screener though is less expensive for now.

And may I be the first to wish you and my dear friend Heeeeeeruld a very HAPPY ANNIVERSARY tomorrow! Hard to believe it's been 11 yrs since we were young brides-to-be! Hope you get to have a nice dinner or something special. Hard to do with four little ones, heaven knows!!
Love ya!

Howdy! Speaking of haircuts, where in the world would I be without my blind poppa Joe! He has cut my hair since I was 12 days old, and I've only had one serious scare in that whole time period, from then 'til now.

Yep, I remember it was yesterday . . . the sun was shining off the dew of the early morning rose buds that were killed last month by the arctic freeze that came through. I tell you, there is nothing like watching the sun rise over those dead lumps of frozen buds. Beautiful . . . . that reminds me of my graduation from Cherry Turnover school, but that's another story!

Any ways, my hair has never looked better since I started letting my blind pa Joe start cutting it. If you could have seen my sloppy head at say . . . eleven days old, man there is no comparison. I can fondly recall, growing up, Pa Joe saying "Stop crying! Who needs two ears? You got one more!" And then he'd give me a drink from his comb water. Love that man. They finally took his barber license away when they found out he was blind. Plus, he had shaved every squirrel in a six block radius. He was just weird that way. Three cheers for those barbers who make a difference. Bless you.

Kayla, we use something called a "Flowbee". It hooks to the vacuum cleaner and leaves no mess. I'm serious! It cuts hair the same length all over. Sometimes I use clippers (not sure what brand), but they work well for shorter cuts. Love your boys hair though!!! So cute!

How can you cut those curls?!! So adorable.

I sympathize with you though. Joshua's hair grows SO fast. I'm with Tara, I'm scared stiff to try it myself. Super Cuts is too convenient! Maybe one of these days...

Kayla,

I cut all of my boys hair...Larry included! I went once to the barber with Larry and said to myself...I can do that. I bought a cheeper hair cutting set and have done it for 10 years. I have taken each of the boys to Jelly Beans for their first haircut to see how the professsionals would do it and then have cut it ever since. I'll be interested in knowing how this cutter system works for you.

Regarding the DVD player....our van came with one and has been a life safer on big trips! I also used it for entertainment for the boys while those "out-in-town" feeding times...if you know what I mean!

Kayla;

I too cut the hair of all the male persons in our home. I don't like it, but I do it. My hubby is king of frugal and says that our $10 clippers are disposable, since one haircut would cost more. We use just cheap ones from Wally World, however, when they die, I want to get the Wahl brand clippers. My friend has those and I've cut her boy's hair with them, and I like them better. Like someone said, the beauty is, if you mess up they get an "army haircut" which they think is too cool. (Boys are so easy)

Regarding the DVD player, the boys got one for Christmas and it is a life saver on long trips. I highly recommend the hanging leather case Jason suggested. It keeps the player from being handled too much.(which may extend the life of the player) Like Tara said, you may want to go with the two screen option since you have 4 kiddos. Especially since the ones I've seen have the speakers in the screens, with individual volume control. This would probably help control the noise up front. I'd check out a Consumer Report Magazine from the library to check on the best quality and price.

Kayla,
I have the Flow-Bee and use it on my four boys and hubby, too. I think Rob actually prefers to give himself a buzz cut with our clippers, though. I can't remember when we have last graced the halls of a barber shop! Gotta save those bucks! You are more than welcome to try our Flo-Bee if you are interested. I bought mine off eBay for about $65 and expect it to last for about 5 years or so. Jan Hobbs has one and they have used it for years. She is the one who told me how about how long it would last. Considering that it would cost me more $50 or more for 4 boy haircuts and 1 man's cut, I think it's a really good deal!

Kayla,
As you know I cut my boys hair myself(I still do the bowl cut thing, it's the only way I know) & it is really in style here anyways with so many amish=) Actually, it's not that popular here because of that, but I have always loved those kind of hair cuts. BTW Jonathan tells me you are coming to visit me this summer...True? I called you back, but now I'm back in PA & don't have your # hint, hint. Would love to talk...
Regarding the DVD player...we actually just have our boys read dictionaries, or recite catechisms on the road, or they play their favorite, "the quiet game"... Just kidding, but wouldn't recommend our dvd player, it is falling apart from over use on trips to FLA
